Huatulco (pronounced wah-TOOL-coh) is located on the Pacific coast in Oaxaca. It offers an incredible 9 bats and 36 beaches, making for the perfect holiday destination. Swimsuits at the ready!! Huatulco has a wide variety of accommodation for tourists. This includes Airbnb, hotels, luxury villas, resorts and more! So there’s plenty of choice, depending on what type go holiday you fancy and the area you’d like to stay.
Travel
I often like to plan this in as part of a bigger trip, as I’ve found a great way to get cheaper flights. I actually have family in Canada, so visiting them or taking a trip to the USA first, then catching a flight from there is much cheaper. At the time of writing this, flights to Mexico from my local airport are around £1400 and take almost 24 hours with stops along the way. If I travel to Toronto, this is currently around £350 and 8 hours of travel, then Toronto to Mexico are as cheap as £249 and around 7 hours (though you will still need a layover). So whilst the travel is still long, you will be breaking the travel time up by making a holiday for a few days in USA or Canada, and the flight cost is cheaper by more than half!
Where to Stay
One of my favourite places to stay here is the Barceló Huatulco. It’s located in one of the 9 bays, with the rooms being just a few steps from the sea. You get to wake up to incredible views of the sea, or the hotels gorgeous gardens. It also offers and all-inclusive service, so you know you can relax and enjoy all of the incredible food and drink on offer! As mentioned, I’d plan this as part of my trip to Canada, and Huatulco Barcelo for Canadians is the perfect destination. It’s the perfect place to rest, relax and enjoy Mexican culture and cuisine. Whether for a family vacation or even a dream wedding! The hotel offers all the amenities needed to ensure an unforgettable stay.
Activities
If you are looking to do some fun activities whilst you’re visiting Huatulco, there’s plenty to do as well as relaxing! There are lots of national parks to visit in the area, or you could go for a dip in one of the bioluminescent bays if you fancy getting closer to nature. Here you can hire boats or take a Watersport class if you’re feeling brave! There are also plenty of shops, museums and local independent boutiques to visit, which I definitely recommend doing. You can support the local creators and take home some beautiful pieces of culture.
Food and Drink
Mexican food has to be one of my favourites, and there is an abundance of it here. I would recommend trying to get out to try some local cuisine, as well as the Mezcal of course! There are plenty of incredible street food vendors here. They offer some of the most delicious food you will eat for an incredibly affordable price! I would recommend checking trip advisor and having a look at some of the restaurants that are local to where you’re staying. Some of my best recommendations are Terra Cotta, El Grillo Marinero, Rocoto and Los Parados. I’d also 100% recommend booking a Huatulco Mezcal tour.
If you fancy getting involved in the food, there are lots of traditional Oaxacan and street food cooking classes in the area. These are definitely on my bucket list to try.
Hopefully this gives you a little taster of all the great things you can do in Huatulco, as well as just relaxing and experiencing the local culture.
