Rola Wala
In all honesty, it’s super rare that I find myself opting for fast food, or at least food from a convenience or fast food restaurant. I work from home, and Robbie and I both love cooking, so we’re usually cooking fresh for most of our meals daily. Which I love! And when I do eat out, this is usually in more of a restaurant setting, for a date night or a planned lunch with friends or family. I just never find myself out and about, needing a quick solution, and actually if I ever do feel that way, the options are all quite unhealthy, meaning I’d rather grab a snack and wait until I’m home. I think that over the years, the lack of healthy-but-still-delicious options have just meant that I now don’t even consider this sort of meal anymore. But that might be about to change with Rola Wala!
I was recently invited down to Rola Wala’s Manchester Restaurant. Described as your favourite Indian takeaway and Subway having a baby – this immediately piqued my interest! I love Indian food and although I’m not a big Subway fan, I love the concept of being able to add different flavours and ingredients to personalise your meal. I also saw that most of their main meals actually come in at under 500 calories. Perfect for a delicious, filling and fresh lunch.
Rola Wala
Rola Wala was brought to the UK by Aussie traveller, Mark Wright. He discovered these epic flavours when travelling the Kolkata backstreets, Bombay beaches, and Keralan waterways. And since then he’s been on a journey to bring the incredible experience of Indian street food to the UK, in a fast fresh format.
Rola Wala (meaning, ‘man that rolls’ in Hindi, a reference to their famous naan rolls), started life as a street food stall in London. Winning the hearts of customers, critics, TV chefs and the media, Rola Wala opened their first restaurant in Trinity Leeds.
Since then, Rola Wala has featured in a Hollywood movie (‘Burnt’, starring Bradley Cooper), been voted ‘London’s Best Wrap’ by Rita Ora and the team at Saturday Kitchen (BBC One), featured on Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook: London, and even made a cameo appearance on Jamie Olivers Friday Night Feasts!
Review
After seeing a few people post on socials about Rola Wala, I was actually really looking forward to my visit. We visited for a Friday lunch treat and it definitely loved up to the hype. Just choose your main dish, and then your meat or veggie to fill this, and then you can go wild on the salads, there is loads to choose from and these are all free. Subway is the perfect reference for how you can personalise and add different ingredients to your meal, but this is 110% better. Finally add any sauces, snacks and drinks, and enjoy!
We tried the naan roll – I had seen too many delicious-looking photos of this, how could I not? Plus the tacos, along with a couple of drinks and mini poppadoms for snacking. We also tried a mix of meat and veggie options. I’m not veggie but I always like to try those just so I can give a fair review. Honestly both were super tasty and I’d happily order the veggie options again. If you are a meat-lover, 100% try the lamb in the naan roll. What a dream combo!
Rola Wala has definitely won me over, and is a very welcome addition to the healthy fast food scene for me. I would totally visit here if I fancied a nice lunch, and you can also Deliveroo them!
The Manchester branch of Rola Wala is located on Deansgate, and you can visit their website here for more info.
