As travel becomes more and more costly, a short break is proving to be popular. Avoid the typically longer wait for your only week or two out of your home country, and split up your holiday time over a few smaller breaks. This way is great for using less precious annual leave and avoiding breaking the bank! Get the best of a few worlds – beach bliss, a countryside retreat or a city escape.
So let this guide take away the pressure of planning! With so many destinations likely to be not too far from your doorstep, give yourself something to look forward to sooner than the peak summer holiday. From the capitals of bustling Prague and London, to the sunlit paradises of the Spanish islands, we’ve got you covered.
Ibiza, Spain
Starting with one of my favourite destinations. The White Isles of Ibiza aren’t just a paradise for party lovers. With impeccable white sands and a laid-back bohemian culture throughout the island, it’s the perfect spot for a last-minute short stay.
Head to the Old Town, Dalt Vila and see the cultural hub of bohemian life. The town is UNESCO-protected due to its fortress of historical value and you can walk up to the Old Fortress and appreciate the panoramic views across the rest of the island. Pick up locally made souvenirs from the wealth of local craft shops and embrace the relaxed vibes.
If you are craving a night or two of party, San Antonio is the place to be. Spend day to night at iconic beach clubs and see the sunrise as you leave some of the world-famous nightclubs. The ultimate Ibizan experience can be had at Ushuaïa or Amnesia. Watch the sunset and Café Mambo where DJs often play out chill-out sets to get you in the mood before the nighttime hits.
Lanzarote, The Canary Islands
One of the Spanish-owned Canary Islands, Lanzarote has enough to explore to jampack a short break itinerary. Think volcanic landscapes meeting cultural hubs and livelihoods. Natural beauty meets attractions to please all, here. From relaxing days to all-out family fun, there is something for everyone to enjoy during a short trip.
Explore the most iconic volcanic landscape at Timanfaya National Park. Home to what are known as the Fire Mountains, the landscape is abundant with both hillside vantage points and pristine valleys. Take a guided bus tour through the craters and lava fields, or watch the marvels of geothermal demonstrations to showcase just how distinct this landscape is.
Spend afternoons relaxing on some of the island’s most picturesque beaches. Stroll along the Promenade at Playa Blanca to help pick out the best sunbathing spot. Why not stay in one of the many villas in Lanzarote, so you can create the perfect home-away-from-home setup? If you really want to relax, stay put in a luxury villa for the weekend. With plush interiors, private pools and sea views as options, you won’t want to call anywhere else home after! Sit back, relax and enjoy – you’ll wonder why you’ve never done shorter stays sooner!
Prague, The Czech Republic
The capital of the Czech Republic is the perfect fairytale city for a short break. Explore the Old Town and the historic landmarks dotting the streets and town square. Admire the Baroque and Gothic architecture including the famous Astronomical Clock towering above the other marvels. Stroll along Charles Bridge which connects the two parts of the city.
The other side of the city is known as Lesser Town. Home to the largest ancient castle complex in the world, Prague Castle, enjoy an amble around. Check out the graffiti mural of John Lennon, which is symbolic of peach and freedom during the communist era.
When it comes to the choice of where to stay in the Czech Republic, consider the various neighbourhoods of the capital city. Stay near Petrin Hill to have an oasis of greenery close by. Offering a break from the bustling city while being a picturesque viewpoint to see the skyline too. Or perhaps enjoy a riverside stay lining the longest river in the country, the Vltava River. Especially in the evening due to the city’s lights, the riverside is a perfect photo opportunity in the city.
London, England
The capital of one of the most powerful countries in the world, London is equally one of the most powerful cities in the world. Visit the metropolitan for a taste of the quintessential England, as well as the influence of international cultures across different boroughs.
Head to the vibrant market scene for a perfect lunchtime spot. From the historic Borough Market to the renowned stalls of Camden, you’ll be sure to find your favourite eats. It wouldn’t be a proper evening in the city without a trip to the iconic West End! Research the array of incredible theatre breaks and see some of the most impressive spectacles of musical theatre in the world.
Bordeaux, France
Wine lovers, look no further. South of France town of Bordeaux is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional history. Including the world-renowned wine culture spread across countless vineyards that have been central to France’s global reputation, the city is known around the world for its culinary scene.
The city streets are lined with well-preserved 18th-century façades. Explore the pristine squares, boulevards and splendour of the city beneath sunlit skies in the city. Pick out some top-pick wines and enjoy sipping on robust reds or fine whites in the afternoons. Though very popular, the city is less busy than other French hotspots, so it’s ideal for enjoying a quaint weekend away.
Summary
To enjoy fewer elements to plan and still get the buzz of a holiday, don’t dismiss a short break! No matter the time of year, embrace the joy of always having a holiday booked. Weekends in the city to a few days by the sea, the choice is yours.
