February 20, 2024

India’s Hidden Gems

India; a land of vibrant culture, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes. It is often associated with iconic tourist attractions like the Taj Mahal, Jaipur’s palaces, or the bustling streets of Delhi. However, beyond these well-trodden paths lie hidden treasures waiting to be explored! In this post, I’ll be chatting about some of India’s lesser-known destinations that promise unique experiences away from the crowds. From the tranquil backwaters of Kerala to the historic ruins of Hampi, and the scenic landscapes of the Northeast.

So if India is on your bucket list, but you prefer exploring those places that locals love, rather than the busy tourist spots, keep reading!

Tranquil Backwaters of Kerala

Tucked away in the southwestern corner of India, Kerala is renowned for its serene backwaters. A network of interconnected rivers, lakes, and canals that meander through lush greenery and quaint villages. While Alleppey and Kumarakom are popular backwater destinations, there are lesser-known gems awaiting discovery.

One of these little hidden gems is Kollam, often referred to as the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. Here, you can experience a leisurely houseboat cruise along the Ashtamudi Lake, surrounded by coconut groves and picturesque landscapes. Experience the tranquillity as you glide past traditional villages and witness the unhurried pace of local life.

Historic Ruins of Hampi

Nestled in the heart of Karnataka, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire. While Hampi attracts history enthusiasts and backpackers alike, there are areas within this vast archaeological site that remain off the beaten path.

Venture beyond the main temple complexes to discover hidden gems like the Achyutaraya Temple, known for its intricate carvings and secluded ambiance. Trek up Matanga Hill for panoramic views of the surrounding ruins and the Tungabhadra River snaking through the landscape below. Lose yourself amidst the ancient boulders and remnants of a bygone era, where every stone tells a story.

Scenic Landscapes of the Northeast

The Northeast region of India, comprising states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, boasts some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country, yet remains relatively unexplored by mainstream tourism.

In Meghalaya, the living root bridges of Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village, offer a glimpse into the harmonious relationship between nature and humanity. Trek through dense forests and cascading waterfalls to reach these marvels of bioengineering, crafted over centuries by the indigenous Khasi tribes.

For those seeking adventure, Arunachal Pradesh beckons with its rugged terrain and pristine wilderness. Embark on a trek to Tawang, home to the second-largest monastery in the world. Or explore the enchanting valleys of Ziro, known for their vibrant tribal culture and picturesque landscapes.
