Planning your next vacation? I’m already dreaming of my next holiday after getting back from New York! And if you’re looking for somewhere that has natural beauty, spectacular weather, culture, history, and food, its hard to beat Sardinia. The second-largest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily), the Italian island is known as one of the best beach getaways in Europe, but there is also much more to it than this!
Natural Wonders & the Outdoors
Sardinia is a breathtaking island with nearly 2000km of coastline, which includes gorgeous sandy beaches that are ideal for relaxing after a day of exploring. The mountains terrain and hiking trails ensure that there is enough to keep you busy each day, and a cycle tours are a great way to visit multiple attractions and discover the beauty that this island has to offer.
Culture & History
Understanding the culture and history of your holiday destination will always help you get more from your trip. Sardinia boasts a rich cultural heritage and has an intriguing history. Throughout Sardinia, you will discover thousands of mysterious Bronze Age stone ruins shaped like beehives (called nuraghi), and historical sites like Nuraghe Su Nuraxi will give you a glimpse into the prehistoric past. You can also visit the charming old towns in Sardinia to immerse yourself in the traditional culture.
Culinary Delights
Food is a key component of all my travel experiences. It gives you a deep insight into the history, culture, and heart of any destination. You are in for a treat in Sardinia, as it is renowned for its delicious cuisine! As you might expect, the food here is largely Italian, with an emphasis on fresh seafood and traditional dishes. There are a few specialty dishes you will want to try here. These include as Su Porcheddu (roast suckling pig), culurgiones (ravioli-like stuffed pasta), and Zuppa Gallurese (a savoury bread pudding). Oh and don’t forget to end a hearty Sardinian meal with a glass of freezing-cold limoncello! The perfect way to refresh your pallet. You are also spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants in Sardinia.
Tips
For the full Sardinian experience, I’d recommend staying for at least a week. Although it is an island, there’s a huge amount to see and do throughout. And you don’t want to feel rushed on holiday. Additionally, be prepared for soaring temperatures. They actually see up to 48 degrees Celsius and busy tourist crowds during July and August so be mindful of this! Driving is the best way to get around the island, so booking a rental in advance is also a great idea.
Sardinia is a fantastic holiday destination with something for everyone. With beautiful sandy beaches, gorgeous weather, stunning natural scenery, rich culture and history, and tantalising cuisine, it’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with Sardinia. Hopefully, this post will give you some inspo and help you get the most out of your time here!
