Overnight Hair Routine
Overnight is when your hair is most vulnerable to tangles, knots, and breakage. That’s why having a solid overnight hair routine is so important for coarse hair types. Follow these three simple steps before bed to wake up with beautiful, healthy locks.
Step 1: Detangle in the Shower
It’s crucial to detangle your coarse hair properly while it’s wet and slick with conditioner. This initial step helps to minimise stress on the hair and makes it easier to tackle smaller knots later. It also helps minimize breakage and makes combing much easier. Apply a detangling shampoo for coarse hair that’ll provide plenty of slip to gently work through knots.
Finger comb your hair first to separate large tangles. Then, use a wide-tooth comb or wet brush to smooth out sections from ends to roots. Take your time, and don’t rush this step. Thoroughly detangling in the shower helps prevent knots overnight, and it can also help to distribute the conditioner evenly throughout your hair.
Once out of the shower, consider using a leave-in conditioner or a detangling spray. These products provide extra conditioning and make it easier to manage your hair throughout the day, reducing the likelihood of tangles forming. Apply the leave-in conditioner or spray evenly, focusing on areas that are prone to tangling.
Step 2: Deep Condition
Hydration is key for softening and smoothing coarse hair. Apply a deep conditioning hair mask and put your hair in a shower cap. Preferably opt for a mask with natural oils and butters, to deeply moisturise each strand. For a more natural option, you could even make your own coconut oil hair mask for strong, shiny hair.
To maximise the benefits of the deep conditioning treatment, generously apply the hair mask, ensuring every strand is coated, and then secure your hair under a shower cap. The cap creates a warm, enclosed environment that enhances the absorption of the mask. After the designated time, thoroughly rinse out the hair mask.
For an added boost, introduce light heat from your blow dryer for 10-15 minutes. The warmth facilitates better penetration of the mask into the hair shaft, allowing it to work its magic more effectively.
Remember to choose a leave-in conditioner that is specifically formulated for coarse hair to ensure maximum effectiveness. With consistent use of these in your hair routine, you’ll notice a significant improvement in the softness and manageability of your hair.
Step 3: Seal with Oil
The final step is sealing in moisture with an oil to prevent dryness and frizz while you sleep. Good options for coarse hair include argan, coconut, and marula oils, which are lightweight yet supremely hydrating.
Apply several drops onto damp hair after your shower and comb through evenly. Wrap your hair in a soft silk or satin scarf or bonnet at night. The smooth fabric won’t cause friction and pull on your hair while you sleep.
In the morning, simply unwrap and style as desired. Your coarse hair will be silkier, more manageable, and shiny. Using a satin or silk pillowcase can also help to lock in moisture in your hair while you sleep. This will further enhance the benefits of sealing in moisture with an oil.
Say Hello to Frizz-Free Hair
If you have naturally coarse hair, you know how challenging it can be to keep it looking smooth and frizz-free. But implement this nourishing 3-step overnight hair routine consistently, and you’ll see a remarkable improvement in the look and feel of your locks over time.
Regular detangling, especially when done correctly, promotes stronger, smoother, and more lustrous hair, ultimately enhancing your overall hair care experience.
