Solo travel is one of those things that sounds exciting but can also feel a bit nerve-wracking. You might be looking forward to the freedom, but the thought of going it alone in a new place can leave you a little daunted.
The thing is that it doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right preparation and attitude, it’s a rewarding experience that can boost your confidence and show you a whole new world. So, how do you make sure your trip goes smoothly? Here are a few pointers.
Do your homework
First things first, get yourself clued up. A little knowledge goes a long way. You don’t need to know every tiny detail, but it helps to understand the basics.
Check the government’s foreign travel advice to find out what you’re getting into. Being in the know about entry requirements, health risks and areas to avoid can make your life a lot easier. It’s also useful to do some research on your destination. Definitely look into where you’re staying, good areas for solo travellers and anything to be wary of.
Look after your belongings
When you’re on your own, your stuff is your responsibility. And yours only! It’s wise to keep items like your passport, money and cards on you at all times. Investing in a bum bag designed for hands-free travel can be a game-changer here, keeping your valuables close so you don’t have to keep digging through your bag.
Be mindful, especially in crowded spots, because there will be people trying to take advantage if they see you’re distracted. Maintain a low profile and don’t flash expensive gear unless you want to attract attention. Some parts of the world unfortunately have people who intentionally look for tourists so be mindful when you’re out and about.
Go with your gut
Listen to your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Don’t feel awkward about walking away from a situation or place that gives you the creeps. For example, if a street feels sketchy or your accommodation feels off, find a more populated route or look for somewhere else to stay. It’s a good idea to try and choose somewhere to stay that has a pool and maybe even all-inclusive if it is within your budget. This way you know you can spend your time in the hotel chilling out, reading a book and enjoying some time to relax, without needing to go out alone. I know this might not always be an option, so just consider your nearby amenities if you don’t want to venture too far alone. Do a but of research for good hotels, amenities and places intended for solo travel.

Keep yourself entertained
You’re not always going to be surrounded by people during solo travel. There will be quiet moments, such as on long bus rides or evenings when you’re just chilling on your own.
Situations like these are when having a way to pass the time is a lifesaver. Whether it’s reading a good book or playing top slot games on your phone, having some entertainment ready can make your downtime a lot more fun. Make sure you take things to do or keep you occupied if you’re spending time alone and want something nice to do for one!
Pick up a few phrases
You don’t have to be fluent, but picking up a few key phrases in the local language goes a long way. Basic greetings or questions like “How do I get to…?” can help you connect with locals and get where you need to go. You might also want to learn how to ask for some things like a drink, the bathroom or a menu.
Even if you’re a bit rusty, people will appreciate the effort. It’s a nice icebreaker and can often lead to more interesting chats along the way!
Embrace the solo travel adventure
Solo travel is all about the journey, not just the destination. Things won’t always go as planned, and that’s fine. If you roll with it and stay flexible, you’ll have some of the best stories to tell later.
Sometimes, the most unexpected detours turn into the most memorable parts of the trip. Trust yourself and remember – it’s all part of the adventure.
